Obsession

Kim's project

dear composers

you might already know about this but one of our past, and very talented composition students, Kim Lajoie has been involved in an interesting project called Obsession. There will be a performance of the project soon and it might be interesting for you to go and see what people do after they leave the course (on THURSDAY 6th MAY at the East Brunswick Club – see the link for more). Kim has worked on a number of projects with past students from Monash and some of them are involved with Obsession. Anyway I hope all of you are going well. All the best.

Derris-Kharlan – Live

Last year I got a gig at Billboard supporting Behind Crimson Eyes haha.

I played guitar with some of my chip music compositions and recorded them. Download if you wanna hear. It’s a free release :)

I think the art is rather cool too.

Upcoming live (‘world’) music / TED conference

Hey all,

Some of you may find this of interest and rather than fiddling around with a bulk email (since the student webmail system kind of sucks… where’s our pop3?) I thought I’d post it here.

The Boite

I found this company through word of mouth and they seem to do a fair bit of non-western music performances.

So I guess this is a FYI. I think anyone who saw the Iranian Music lunchtime concert, Afghan music lunchtime concert or the West Sumatran dance concert a few weekends back would enjoy some of this music, or anyone interested in non-western musical traditions.

Friday night (8th May) is Cuban Salsa at Box Hill, Saturday night (9th) there is some Indian music in Fitzroy.

And as Peter mentioned, Metropolis is apparently ongoing this Saturday too.

Also on some of today’s topic, some clips from the TED website:

Ken Robinson on Creativity
Elizabeth Gilbert on Creativity

In a post a while ago I also linked to this, a speech from a woman who had the experience of studying a stroke in action.

Sound Bytes 3

“Friday the 27th of March will see the return of the successful SoundBytes chip shows!

This is set to be something quite special as we have confirmed Jim Cuomo from U, S and A. Along
side Jim will be SoundBytes veteran 10k as well as Maddest Kings Alive, Derris-Kharlan, Astro
Zombies as well as the Slurry Beats Collective throwing down DJ sets between live acts.

There will also be an ABC film crew who will be reviewing artists and taking footage for a chiptune
segment on ABC2′s popular all things gaming show “Good Game”.

Peep the flyer below and see you all there!” – Game Boy Australia

I know it’s a bit late, but I should probably inform you at some stage that I’m playing a gig at Queensberry hotel this friday.

I should be on between 9 and 10 :)

Hope to see some of you there!

Nathan

What’s It about?

This is a blog for staff and students in the Composition Program at Monash University. We intend to keep a record of our study, thinking and compositional projects to document our work, show the world outside what we do and invite comment. We hope that over time the blog will provide useful hints and ideas about the creative processes of composition.
